Anselm Kiefer at La Pedrera

For a few months, the Milà family's own apartment holds the first major Anselm Kiefer exhibition in Barcelona. It is a rare chance to see the main floor, and it is on until 24 January 2027.

Twice a year, the main floor of Casa Milà opens to every visitor as the exhibition hall of the Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera. This season it holds about forty works by Anselm Kiefer, the German artist born in Donaueschingen in 1945, mainly from the private collection of Hans Grothe.

Below: what the exhibition is, what the main floor was, the Art Season ticket and its prices, how to plan the visit, and which other La Pedrera visits sit well alongside it. For the winter timetable, read our La Pedrera winter hours post.

The quick answer

"The Secret Life of Plants. Anselm Kiefer in the Grothe Collection" runs on La Pedrera's main floor from 2 October 2026 to 24 January 2027. The Art Season ticket, sold on La Pedrera's own website, combines it with the full building visit for €35 per adult. Allow 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours, and bring headphones for the musical itinerary. The building is closed on 25 December and from 11 to 17 January 2027.

What is the Anselm Kiefer exhibition at La Pedrera?

The first major monographic exhibition in Barcelona devoted to Anselm Kiefer: about forty works, mainly from the Hans Grothe collection, organised by the Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera.

The full title is "The Secret Life of Plants. Anselm Kiefer in the Grothe Collection", with Walter Smerling as curator. La Pedrera describes the Grothe collection as one of the most important devoted to the artist, and adds pieces from several other private collections. The works span painting, sculpture, installation, photography and artist's books.

The foundation frames the show around "a profound reflection on memory, matter and knowledge". Its Gaudí Year page goes further and calls it the first major monographic exhibition dedicated to Kiefer in Spain.

What is the main floor of La Pedrera?

The apartment where the owners, Pere Milà and Roser Segimon, lived. Today it is the foundation's exhibition hall, open to all visitors only twice a year.

The main floor shows Gaudí's open-plan layout, made possible because the building has no load-bearing walls, along with stone columns, some of them inscribed, and the original windows. The decorated ceilings once covered all the rooms. Roser Segimon disliked Gaudí's decoration of her home, and after his death she had 532.5 m2 of ceilings removed. She went on living on this floor even after the building was sold in 1946.

Later the space held offices, a bingo hall and an art gallery. On the standard route you see the tenants' apartment one floor up, a bourgeois flat of 1911. The exhibition seasons are the time to see the owners' floor as well. Before Kiefer it held the Nabis show, from 6 March to 28 June 2026.

How much is the Art Season ticket?

€35 for adults, €19.50 for ages 12 to 17, €26 for seniors, students and visitors with a disability of 33% or more, and free for under-12s. It is sold on La Pedrera's own website.

Art Season is the regular La Pedrera visit plus the exhibition: the facade, both courtyards, the 1911 apartment, the attic with the Espai Gaudí and the rooftop, then the main floor. It includes the videoguide in 11 languages, and La Pedrera puts the visit at 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours. The exhibition page also lists an exhibition-only entry at €16.

The day ticket on GetYourGuide covers the standard route without the exhibition. It suits anyone who mainly wants Gaudí's rooms and rooftop, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. For Kiefer as well, pick Art Season when you buy.

How should you plan your visit to the exhibition?

Book a morning slot, allow up to 2 hours, and bring headphones: the musical itinerary and other resources download by QR code.

The exhibition page gives the main floor's hours as 10:00 to 19:30, with last admission at 19:00, and 11:00 to 19:30 on 1 January. The building's winter day hours end at 18:30, so check the slot on your ticket rather than the general times. La Pedrera is closed on 25 December and from 11 to 17 January 2027, the week before the show ends, so the last days will be busy.

The public areas are step-free with lifts. For the exhibition, La Pedrera offers accessible guided visits with a tactile itinerary, Catalan Sign Language, easy-read material and cognitive resources, booked by email. The rooftop is the one part of the route that is not wheelchair-accessible, and it closes in rain.

Which other La Pedrera visits pair well with the exhibition?

The Night Experience for the rooftop after dark, the early-morning guided tour for a quiet start, and Premium for the parts of the building most visitors never see.

The main floor rewards an unhurried visit. That leaves the evening free for the Night Experience, which takes a different route through the building and ends with a video-mapping show on the rooftop and cava. In winter the sessions start at 19:00.

The early-morning guided tour goes in before opening with access to restricted areas. Premium is a guided visit in English for up to six, with the mezzanine, the rear courtyard and the period lift. It is a new listing with no reviews yet, from $135. For the whole Gaudí story around the exhibition, see our guide to visiting Casa Milà.
